Pickle Update and Field Report - Summer 2012

Field Report

The temperatures here in the Central San Joaquin Valley have warmed up considerably.  Continuous sunshine with mild evenings once again has provided the ideal environment to grow the best quality pickling cucumbers anywhere.

The bees are happily buzzing around the cucumber plants doing what they do best.  The lady bugs we introduce every year for our environmentally-based pest control program have made themselves at home.  It’s Summer time!

All those years and months of preparing the land, planting the seed, irrigating and maintaining the fields are now being realized.  We have a number of fields at various stages including those that are being harvested now.  Quality has been exceptional as we anticipate another successful Summer program.  The San Joaquin Valley allows us to plant and harvest from April through October - the longest growing season for pickling cucumbers in the United States.

It’s always exciting to meet our customers and even more so when they are able to visit us and experience all of the Summer activities.  This month we welcome Mr. Pickles and The Ram.  A tour of the plant and our local fields provides a close, hands-on experience while nurturing the relationships we strive to develop and maintain for years.

We recently completed the upgrade for Cooler #1 implementing the most energy efficient system available in the market.  Even more exciting is our commitment to begin building our long anticipated retail line in Cooler #2.  Our hand pack philosophy will be complemented with only enough equipment to increase capacity to meet the overwhelming response we have received for this product line.  Hold on to your pickle hats because the fun is just beginning!

News from the kitchen

The R&D department at County Fair Foods is very excited about the new recipes we are developing. One of our favorites is the “Sweet Heat Pickle Slices”. We’ve taken our famous, award winning Bread & Butter pickles and spiced them up with secret all-natural ingredients to give them a “Wow!” factor. This product is great with chicken, Bar-B-Que beef or pork sandwiches.
